Joseph Slights Nominated to Court of Chancery

Joseph Slights III has been nominated by Governor Jack Markell to serve as a Vice-Chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery. Assuming he is confirmed by the Delaware Senate, Slights will replace Vice Chancellor John Noble, who will retire this month from the bench.
Slights is a Dover native who worked as a trial litigator at Richards Layton & Finger and Morris James when it was known as Morris James Hitchens and Williams. Slights was appointed to the Superior Court in 2000 and served as a judge until 2012, when he returned to private practice at Morris James as a partner in the firm's Corporate and Commercial Litigation group.
The Court of Chancery is Delaware's unique court of equitable jurisdiction. It is one of Delaware's three constitutional courts, along with the Supreme Court and Superior Court. Because of Delaware's central place in the incorporation and formation of business entity, courts around the country look to Chancery Court decisions to help determine the common law on issues relating to fiduciary duties, shareholder rights, and other matters related to corporate and business entity governance.
